Students from the High School’s AP Seminar and AP Research
courses recently participated in the first phase of the sixth annual
Northwell Health Spark! Challenge. The full-day, hands-on field
experience with the emergency department at Plainview Hospital was
filled with engaging and inspiring opportunities and introduced students
to some of the many career areas that require competencies in STEM
skills.
Students Sarah Cain, Eilis Casey, Erin Dany, Jacqueline
Holden, Madisyn King, Sarah Kruzynski, Denis Lane, Arianna McMorris,
Fatou Ndiaye, Jalal Sawas, Sofia Stirpe, Eleanora Undrus, Larissa Verdi
and Olivia Wilcox rotated among stations that included forensic
nursing and chain of evidence procedures, stroke victim identification
and clot busting, airway intubation and ventilation, and severe wound
stapling. Students then had the opportunity to ask medical professionals
questions related to their work.
Accompanied by high school AP Seminar teacher Mr. Edward
Storck, social studies teacher Mr. Walter Caskie and teaching assistant
Ms. Micelle Kavanagh, the students will work together to create an
advertisement and presentation of a career that they learned about
during the visit. In the spring, students will compete against 58 other
schools at an event where the presentations are judged by a panel of
Northwell Health executives.
