Seven Shoreham-Wading River High School students had a unique
educational experience when they attended Molloy College’s Women in
Science Day to celebrate the accomplishments of well-known women in
science.
Along with science teacher Lori Racaniello and teaching assistant Denise
Kohart, the five WISE club and two Science Research students attended a
keynote lecture by Dr. Sylvia Earle who spoke about her experiences
being a chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration; founder of the Sylvia Earle Alliance; and subject of the
award-winning documentary Mission Blue, which highlights her campaign
to create a global network of protected marine sanctuaries; among other
accomplishments.
The students also heard from other renowned research scientists
including Dr. Betty Borowsky, Dr. Julianne Chase, Dr. Merryl Kafka, and
Dr. Jennifer Mattei. After the lectures, the students were treated to a
meet and greet where they were able to speak with each of the research
scientists.
