High School sophomore Keyi Chen captured first place in the 10th-grade division at this year’s Suffolk County Mathematics Tournament.

Keyi secured the win by competing against a field of 70 10th-graders, who represented 20 Suffolk County school districts. He attended the competition, along with his school’s 20-member Mathletes Team.

This is not the first time that Keyi has won a title at the county tournament. As a freshman he also finished in first place.

According to Keyi, mathematics is not just a subject he excels in, but also one he has a passion for. In addition to competing with his school’s Mathletes team, he also participates in math challenges offered by Math Kangaroo in USA, an international competition in math, and MathCounts, a national live competition series.  When not calculating numbers, Keyi can be found on the soccer field.

“To me, math is entertaining and fun as there is so much to explore,” said Keyi, who has his sights on entering the fields of math, engineering or the sciences when he reaches college.
