Shoreham-Wading River High School’s WISE Program engages and motivates academically talented women in the excitement and challenge of STEM, and encourages them to pursue further education and careers that require advanced STEM training. They work in group activities and projects, visit laboratories and are introduced to research under the supervision of WISE University mentors.

On May 4, students along with adviser Mrs. Ellen Fraser attended the WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Symposium held at the Wang Center at Stony Brook University.

The event began with a Poster and Exhibit Share Fair where the students fielded questions about their project, Microbes are Everywhere. Opening remarks by WISE outreach coordinator Jacquelyn Gatta were followed by those of keynote speaker Leana Grotz, who encouraged the students to follow their passions.

SWR students who attended the event were Natalee Cortina, Jocelyn Nastasi, Julianna O’Neill, Oliva Pesso, Katelyn Roberts, Isabelle Scherl and Alexandra Seletskaya. (Other students in the program are Shea Baran, Maya Beyersdorfer, Ava Gengler, Ariel Greenberg, Kerrin McGuire and Leigha Serio). They were introduced by Grace Himmler, the Ph.D. student who taught and ran the Microbes are Everywhere lab curriculum with SWR students.

Each student in the eight participating school districts was awarded a certificate.
