Dear Shoreham-Wading River School District Community,

The technology landscape has recently undergone a significant transformation with the emergence of ‘generative artificial intelligence’ systems such as ChatGPT. These systems, which allow anybody to enter a question on a website and get a response specific to the question, have proven to be remarkably popular among people, industries and organizations, including education. Our students are very likely to be expected to be experienced in productively utilizing artificial intelligence in their future careers. AI is predicted to have a major impact in the workplace across all sectors and may augment and/or automate many jobs and industries in the near future.

As the impact of generative AI continues to grow and find its way into our schools and classrooms, we are forming a Generative AI Working Group of teachers, staff, administrators, students, and community members to develop strategies to respond to this trend. This group will work to draft a position statement outlining expectations for staff and student use of generative AI technology in our schools. This position statement will be used by the District to identify relevant instructional themes and strategies, and develop a professional learning strategy to support staff.

We invite you to participate in this group and help us create an approach to generative AI for our district.

Three meetings will be held in-person on Mondays in the High School Library on December 11th, January 8th, and January 22nd from 5:30 - 7:00pm. To be considered for this committee, you must be able to commit to all three meeting dates. Please fill out the application provided and submit it by Monday, November 20, 2023.

It would be helpful to have experts in the AI field; however, we are looking for a diverse group of individuals to join this task force, so please apply regardless of your experience or background with generative AI. We believe a diversity of perspectives will contribute to our overall success.

We will notify selected members via email by Monday, November 27, 2023.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to participate in this important work. We look forward to working with you to ensure that our students and teachers are prepared for the future.
