Shoreham-Wading River High School students in Mrs. Ashley O’Connor’s orchestra class participated in a unique experience this week when they welcomed Dr. Shelly Tramposh, viola professor at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Dr. Tramposh introduced orchestra students to mariachi music and taught them how to play the mariachi song, “El Tirador” while she played along on vihuela and guitarrón, two Mexican string instruments. She worked with orchestra students throughout the day, providing private instrumental coaching sessions to upperclassmen interested in pursuing a career in music. Dr. Tramposh also visited the Music Theory I class and spoke about her experiences as a professional musician and educator, about the audition process for collegiate music programs, and about the course and program offerings at the Crane School of Music. Students were able to ask questions throughout the session and gained valuable insights.
