Miller Avenue School students are exploring some world-famous landmarks with librarian Brittany LaValle and shared their progress at the Oct. 10 Board of Education meeting. The second graders built replicas of Tower Bridge in London, the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pyramids of Giza and other structural wonders using Legos.
During the school day, Miss LaValle visits classrooms with the school’s Makerspace on the Go. She introduces the students to the project and they are eager to engage their innate curiosity with these hands-on, playful learning tools. The activity requires students to plan, collaborate and tap into their engineering skills.
As Miss LaValle noted, makerspaces are a growing concept in libraries that provide users with a collaborative workspace to get creative with STEAM projects.
The student-centered workspaces are inspiring environments where the students are imagining, designing and creating.
