Students in Renee Gilmore’s second grade class worked on a lesson that focused on features a river needs for its water to flow. Students examined videos and photographs of flowing rivers, comparing and contrasting river features. Then they brainstormed what they would need to build models to test. After constructing meandering or straight rivers, they added dyed water and changed the pitch so that the water would flow freely.
