Did you know that dumplings are associated with wealth in the Chinese culture? Or that oranges represent luck, prosperity and a long life?

Students in the new Language Buddies Club held their first meeting at Wading River School to learn these and other facts. English as a new language teacher Ms. Jennifer Hoey coordinated activities for the participating students to learn about how Lunar New Year is celebrated. The students snacked on dumplings and oranges as part of Chinese tradition to bring good fortune in the new year. They made Chinese lanterns with three wishes for the new year and worked on making lucky cats and dragon crafts. Our Chinese students shared ways their own families celebrate.

“All involved had such a nice time,” District Director of Humanities Mrs. Nicole Waldbauer said.
