Wading River School students are reading to their heart’s content!

With so many books to choose from in the school’s library, librarian Ms. Brittany LaValle is hosting the schools’ very own Mock Caldecott list. Students in grades 3-5 are working to identify books worthy of the distinguished American Library Association’s famed Caldecott Medal, which will be named nationally at the end of January. Students in grades 3 and 4 chose “Hot Dog” by Doug Salati and fifth graders selected “Knight Owl” by Christopher Denise. They students reviewed a selection of 10 books, put out as predictions by School Library Journal.

The practice is an excellent way to demonstrate to the students the artistic techniques used; pictorial interpretation of a story, theme or concept; delineation of plot, characters, setting and additional information through the pictures and more. But most importantly, it enhances their hunger for books!
