Albert G. Prodell Middle School hosted a Veterans Day assembly for eighth graders to honor our nation’s heroes on Nov. 7. Student vocalist Kate McQuade led the assembly with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” followed by the middle school chamber ensemble with a patriotic medley conducted by music teacher Mr. Fred Volz.

Local veterans John Fernandez, Buddy Gengler, Lt. Dan Guida and Michael Wern were welcomed and shared with the students their experiences in the military. Mr. Gengler encouraged all students to find a way to serve the community, whether it be in the military or as a civilian, and Mr. Fernandez shared his journey as a wounded warrior and the bond that those who serve have for life.

Nov. 7 marked the anniversary of Lt. Guida’s arrival home from Vietnam, and he noted his appreciation for the support that he receives when he walks the halls of Prodell. It has been a decade since the middle school “adopted” Lt. Guida as the school’s honored veteran. The school community thanks Mr. Wern for his continued service to Shoreham-Wading River as a graduate, parent, staff member and guest speaker.

The feeling of patriotism and pride is evident throughout Prodell. Thanking all veterans and their families for their sacrifice and service this Veterans Day!
