SOS and ACT for Prodell Students

The Albert G. Prodell counseling and guidance team presented the SOS Signs of Suicide program to eighth grade students. SOS, a suicide awareness and prevention program, educates and encourages students to seek help for themselves if needed, as well as provides information on how they can help a friend get the help they need.

Through the program, students learn that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help as well as how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend. They also learned the acronym ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend. The educators encouraged them to identify their own sources of strength they can draw upon when/if they are struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts.

The Shoreham-Wading River School District is grateful to Prodell’s staff counseling and guidance team members Doreen Armstrong, Brendan Lynch, Andrea Monz, Kaitlin Moriarty and Fallon Moscicki, along with health teacher Jason Lee in making this a successful program for students.
