Shoreham-Wading River student-athletes know that participating in a sport goes beyond the rigors of playing on a team. Good sportsmanship, expanding friendships and teamwork are just a few of the healthy and active lifestyle traits that develop and evolve over time.

On Oct. 11, the girls volleyball teams took another step in making the community proud. In both varsity and junior varsity home games against Hampton Bays, the students added benevolence to their skills. They raised more than $3,544 for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The students sold T-shirts and paper flags that were adorned with donor names and were part of the decorative scene at the school. They also sold raffles for baskets and hosted a pizza sale and bake sale. Shoreham-Wading River High School senior Carter Rubin sang the national anthem before the game, and a representative from the Tunnel to Towers Foundation attended to share the history of the organization that was started after Sept. 11, 2001, to assist America’s heroes.

“We are so grateful that our student-athletes embrace causes in our communities,” Athletic Director Mr. Mark Passamonte said. “We thank the teams and coaches Hailey Wehr and Cristina Iannacchino for spearheading and championing this cause.”
