Shoreham-Wading River High School students are exploring the discipline of ceramics through various techniques and studying general ceramic history while developing self-expressive and individual problem-solving skills. The class, new this year for students in grades 10-12, highlights all aspects of the studio process from procedure to craftsmanship.
Students are using historical art references for inspiration while teacher Ms. Samantha Shepard guides them in hands-on projects that focus on traditional hand building methods. A recent class focused on the Italian sgraffito technique, in which students created the preliminary surface, covered it with another and then scratched the superficial layer so that a pattern or shape would emerge in the lower color. Students will also learn the glazing and firing process.
