What better way to connect with social studies lessons than to step back in time?

That is what Miller Avenue School second graders did when students visited the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook.

Mrs. Linda Burke and Ms. Renee Gilmore’s class visited the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook on April 1. As was the tradition, girls wore long dresses, aprons, shawls, boots and bonnets. Boys wore caps and suspenders and pulled their socks up over their pants to look like breeches.

According to Mrs. Burke, the students attended class in the Nassakeag School, a one-room schoolhouse built in 1877. They also learned about chores on the farm such as churning butter, turning hay and threshing wheat. They had lunch and outdoor recess at the museum, when they played old-fashioned games such as hoop rolling and a flying circles game. Afterward, they toured The Carriage Museum where they visited different galleries and learned about the story of transportation before the automobile.

“It was a wonderful day,” Mrs. Burke said.
