The geometric side of mathematics was showcased for Shoreham-Wading River High School students when they visited the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics at Stony Brook University. The students and math teachers Mrs. Ellen Fraser and Mr. James Barry learned how famed graphic artist M.C. Escher incorporated mathematics to create detailed and realistic effects in his famous woodcuts, lithographs and prints that often achieved optical and conceptual illusions. The students also took a personal tour of the gallery’s exhibition led by art director and curator Lorraine Walsh, who explained the use of symmetry, hyperbolic geometry and perspective in the artwork.
