Science on the Sound!

Wading River School fifth graders became field scientists when they climbed aboard SoundWaters, a schooner that sailed from Connecticut, in Port Jefferson harbor. The excited student-scientists took part in hands-on activities to complement their classroom STEM lessons.

The active learning included investigating plant and animal life in the sea, studying water samples, learning about scientific sampling with a surface trawling net, examining plankton and even helping to raise the sails and taking a turn at the wheel!

The classes went on three consecutive days in June, and the real-life educational experience allowed them to develop an appreciation and connection to the Long Island Sound, one of the region’s most valuable natural resources.
