SWR Named a Champion of Change

Shoreham-Wading River Central School District’s peer mentoring program has been recognized by the New York State School Boards Association through its Champions of Change program, which honors initiatives making a positive impact on school communities across New York State.
At its Oct. 27 meeting, the Shoreham-Wading River Board of Education received a Champions of Change banner presented by NYSSBA representative Bernadette Smith in recognition of the program’s commitment to fostering an inclusive school environment where all students can learn alongside one another, build meaningful friendships and develop empathy, understanding and a strong sense of belonging.
Superintendent of Schools Mr. Gerard Poole thanked the high school teachers who make the program possible, emphasizing that the recognition belongs to them and their dedication to students.
“Because of the camaraderie, the care, the passion, the growth and the excitement by all involved, classes like these keep students motivated to come to school and strive for their best,” said Mr. Poole.
The Champions of Change recognition highlights the program’s meaningful impact on the Shoreham-Wading River community and its potential to serve as a model for other districts. The district is proud to celebrate the educators and students who continue to make inclusion, connection and belonging a priority.
