History Comes Alive

A group of 25 students from across grade levels recently embarked on a fun and educational trip to Port Jefferson Village as part of America’s 250th Revolutionary Historical Passport program.
During the trip, the students and their teachers visited the Bayles Boat Shop and Drowned Meadow Cottage Museum. The Drowned Meadow Cottage Museum, a restored 18th-century home, served as the residence of Phillips Roe, a member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. Through the trip, students learned about what life was like in colonial times. At the Bayles Boat Shop, students learned about the Whaleboat 1776 Project, which includes the construction of a replica of an armed whaleboat that helps tell the story of Culper Spy Ring courier Caleb Brewster and his crew’s involvement in the American War for Independence on the Long Island Sound.
Students had their America’s 250th “passports” stamped at these two historical sites.
