River High School Students Sharpen Financial Literacy Skills

Representatives from Teachers Federal Credit Union spoke to Shoreham-Wading River High School students enrolled in Financial Literacy classes on Feb. 27 and March 16, helping them to connect the banking and finance fundamentals they learned with context and application.
Christopher DiLeonardo and Johanna Kosak first gave practical guidance on how to manage money by using the 50-30-20 rule (50%:needs, 30%:wants, 20%:saving) and discussed the difference between types of banks with different fees and interest rates. They also reviewed types of credit and compared SAT scores to credit scores, as well as the implications of poor credit scores. Mr. DiLeonardo and Ms. Kosak also included spending pitfalls and best practices in managing money.
The district thanks Mr. DiLeonardo and Ms. Kosak of TFCU for adding depth to Financial Literacy teaching.
