Miller Avenue school Principal Mrs. Claudia Smith welcomed students and their families to the Grade 2 Moving Up ceremony at the Shoreham-Wading River High School auditorium on June 23.

With pride and honor, she congratulated the students on this significant achievement, as they transition from the foundational skills they learned in Miller Avenue to applying them in more involved ways when they enter Wading River School in September as third graders.

Mrs. Smith encouraged the young scholars to remember that their words and actions always make a difference, to abide by the Bucket Filler program behaviors and above all else, remember to be kind.

The students were each called up by their classroom teacher, walked over the bridge set up for the occasion and shook Mrs. Smith’s hand. They concluded the ceremony with the beautiful “Shine Your Way” song directed by music teacher Mrs. Cara Verity.

Mrs. Smith thanked the District, second grade teachers, parents, students, Mr. Richard Bottenus and the tech crew, and the Miller Avenue PTO members for all their amazing work in adapting due to the weather and putting on this colorful and meaningful ceremony in such a short amount of time.

Celebrating School Lessons

What’s better than math and reading skills? Being able to share them with family members. That is exactly what first graders in Caitlin Dennehy’s class at Miller Avenue School did last week.

The celebration included singing a song to their families, sharing some writing and then playing math games to reinforce the lessons they learned this year.

“It was really great getting everyone together again before the end of the year,” Ms.  Dennehy said.

Mrs. Susan Byrnes’ first graders at Miller Avenue School welcomed family members to their first-grade celebration recently. The students sang songs, performed a short play and shared their writing with their parents.

The spectacular celebration highlighted their reading and math skills and took the families on an exciting tour of their school year with Mrs. Byrnes, in which each student recited a line on their experiences in the class. From field trips, to special events and visitors, and their growth and dreams, they sang out a welcome to their first-grade show. One of the songs “Fifty Nifty United States” even had them memorize every state in the country.

Thanks, Mrs. Byrnes, for a great year in first grade!
