Shoreham-Wading River High School rising senior Dongkai (Alex) Zhang, a student entering his fourth year of Science Research at the high school, was selected for the highly competitive High School Science Research Program at Brookhaven National Laboratory this summer. For six weeks Alex worked in the lab of Dr. Yu Xiaohong, whose research involves genetic modification of the Camelina sativa plant to increase fatty acid production in the plant, which would serve to both supplement livestock feed and act as a potential source of biofuel.
“His work allowed him to make use of skills learned in the Science Research program over the last three years, and will be highlighted in a research paper to be submitted later this year in both the Regeneron Student Talent Search as well as the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair,” said Science Research teacher Dana Schaefer.
