Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
It’s been a pleasure welcoming all of our students and families to Briarcliff for the 2012-2013 school year! Our first grade students are settled into their classrooms and our Kindergarten students have adjusted to routines and expectations. As we begin a new school year, my staff and I are emphasizing rules and routines to assist your children in being successful students.
Procedures are outlined below. Please call Briarcliff and speak to office staff if you have any questions.
SCHOOL HOURS - 9:30-3:30
Please don’t drop children at school before 9:20 as there is no supervision. Encourage your children to take the bus from the beginning of the school year.
BUS CHANGES: Please complete the forms for bus change found on our website. We have to have written permission for a child to take a different bus. Phone calls during the school day will not be sufficient to make bus changes. This form should be sent in with your child. They are organized in the front office prior to lunch so the teachers can be informed. This ensures the safety of all children at Briarcliff.
END OF DAY DISMISSAL
When dropping off your child after the day has begun and when picking up your child at the end of the day, sign him/her in or out with the monitor at the front lobby. In an effort to provide a safe and timely dismissal when picking up your child, please pick him/her up prior to the boarding of the buses.
Cars should not attempt to pass buses that have lights flashing during arrival and dismissal times.
Please remember that all cars enter from
Briarcliff Road and exit at
Tower Hill Road.
We ask that late drop off and early pick-up is kept to a minimum so instruction is not interrupted.
It is essential for your child to develop consistent routines and be part of the entire classroom environment.
BUS BEHAVIOR
We remind children that school rules apply on the school bus.
- All students are expected to remain seated and wear a seatbelt, with their feet inside - not in the aisle.
- Students are expected to be respectful to peers and the bus driver.
- Toys and electronic devices are not permitted on the bus or in school.
- Arms and hands should be inside the bus at all times.
Bus drivers are expected to report any disregard of bus rules and procedures by students to First Student.
My office is then notified.
If you have any questions about bus routes, please call First Student Bus Company at 744-2204.
ABSENCE
Please call the school nurse (prior to 10:00 a.m. on the day of the absence) at 821-8201 to report your child’s absence from school. New York State law requires that the school also be informed in writing of the reason for a child's absence or tardiness. Please send a note with your child on the first day back to school after being absent or tardy. In case of contagious disease, please notify the school nurse immediately.
EMERGENCY CARDS
All emergency cards should be completed and returned to school.
Be sure all information is current. Please let us know if contact numbers change throughout the school year.
If no one is at the bus stop when the bus arrives at the stop, your child will be returned to Briarcliff.
My staff will begin by contacting both parents, then call the people listed on your emergency card.
Of course, the contacts will also be called if your child is sick and you cannot be contacted.
LUNCH / RECESS
Grade 1:
11:45- 12:45
Grade K:
12:45-1:45
Children eat lunch in their classrooms while being supervised by monitors.
See PTA information sent at the beginning of the school year about ordering bagels and pizza.
Our students can bring snack to school, but we encourage healthy snacks and discourage sweets and sugary drinks.
Food from outside restaurants cannot be accepted at school on behalf of your child.
Parents may deliver food for their children if needed.
Please contact your child’s teacher before sending in snacks for the class for a celebration.
Unless these foods have been previously planned, they will not be sent down to the classroom.
We do go outside throughout the school year.
All children should be prepared with warm clothes, including hats, gloves and/or mittens and scarves.
VISITATION TO BRIARCLIFF
Be sure to check in with the front desk monitor when visiting Briarcliff to volunteer or for a meeting. We are asking that you do not visit your child’s classroom unless you have made arrangements with your child’s teacher.
We love to have parents visit our classrooms, but unannounced visits interrupt instruction and cause other students to get upset because their parent is not there.
