Students in Albert G. Prodell Middle School learned more about primary sources by analyzing Shoreham-Wading River yearbooks and literary magazines from 1976-2010.

The sixth graders in Lisa McEvoy’s social studies classes were also steered to some archived student newspapers and district newsletters by Superintendent of Schools Mr. Gerard Poole to recognize the District’s 50 years of excellence, and came across an

important SWR historical event: the opening of Prodell Middle School in 1973!

“They made some insightful observations, found some answers to their questions and developed new questions in their investigations,” Ms. McEvoy said. She used the practice as a springboard into the academic year and to help the students understand how history is connected to each of them.

“I want my students to know that social studies isn’t just found in a textbook, with questions at the end of the chapter; it is exciting and fun when we look closer at the artifacts left behind,” she said. “There is no plan for any type of product, other than instilling a curiosity to dig deeper into the ancient world and using the vocabulary we will encounter all year.”
