Shoreham-Wading River High School science research students recently entered projects in the Long Island Science Congress competition. Three projects entered showcased research on the biodiversity of species on the school’s campus: Comparison of lichen species in trafficked and forested areas by Caroline D’Andrea, Anna Minetti and Sophia Stadler; Julianna O’Neill, Katelyn Roberts and Katelyn Schaefer presented on the identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates in vegetated and non-vegetated regions of the campus pond, and Emma Donnelly, Charles Pedersen and Sasha Seletskaya presented on biodiversity of mushroom species in areas of the nature trail as compared to the more populated areas of campus. Derek Blanco and Nikolaos Chantis presented on the chemical analysis of elements contained in nails, and Matthew Cerniglia, James Minetti and Alex Zhang presented on timber; both projects are based on nails and timber recovered from shipwrecks in Long Island waters. Ava Merced presented on the chemical composition of sediment collected from the banks of the Shoreham-Wading River campus pond, and Natalie Casey’s project was on the impact of the lunar cycle on canine behavior.

According to research teacher Mrs. Dana Schaefer, the communication of results is a vital component of the research process, as much for student-scientists as for any other researcher. Students recorded video presentations of their work which were viewed by LISC judges last week.

In the next few weeks, students will continue their yearlong work, with the virtual NSLS-II Users meeting on May 23 culminating the year for students participating in the Brookhaven National Laboratory SPARK program, the annual Barcode Symposium on June 7, which they will attend at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and our own second annual Student Research Symposium, which will take place after school on June 2.
