A unique summer musical experience was enjoyed by three Shoreham-Wading River High School students when they traveled to Italy with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and Choir.

Ryan O’Shaughnessy, Lucas Portuese and James Wicks were part of select musical groups featuring the top high school musicians across Nassau and Suffolk counties to participate on the tour. Ryan sang as a tenor in the choir; Lucas, a double bass player, and James, a percussionist, performed in the orchestra.

For nearly two weeks they toured various regions of Italy with scheduled performances in multiple cities, including Florence, Montecatini Terme, Rapallo, Rome and Sorrento. The choir also sang at mass in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican.

The young men represented each one of the school district’s musical groups – band, orchestra and chorus – and they did an amazing job representing our school, community and country across Italy.
