Shoreham-Wading River High School senior Abigail Wing looked to her school community to find a Girl Scout Gold Award service project that she saw as a beneficial and meaningful effort for younger students of the district.

Abigail presented a comprehensive and well-prepared overview of her proposed project, complete with her design ideas and photos, at a recent Board of Education meeting. Her goal is to donate four to six benches and to repair and refinish two tables in a courtyard at Wading River School.

“My main goal for this project is to provide students with a more usable, functional outdoor space,” she said of the courtyard that students currently use for lessons, experiments, reading and more on sunny days. She commended and thanked Wading River Principal Mr. Louis Parrinello for his encouragement and advice in bringing the project to fruition.

Abigail’s hard work and paying-it-forward proposal paid off, and her project was approved at the Nov. 10 Board of Education meeting. There will be no cost to the district for her project, which will be supported by a volunteer workforce.

“We congratulate Miss Wing on her Girl Scout Gold Award project, and we look forward to her completing it,” Board of Education President Mr. Michael Lewis said.
