Students in Mrs. Maria Lovasco’s ninth grade Global History class participated in a two-day lesson. The first – “This is Sparta!” – was a Breakout EDU classroom immersive lesson in which the students worked in teams to uncover Athenian battle strategies using a series of riddles and puzzles to see if they had what it took to become a Spartan warrior. The subsequent lesson was aimed at providing the students with a more nuanced historical synthesis with a Structured Academic Controversy. The students worked collaboratively by exploring and offering contrasting positions on whether ancient Athens was or was not truly a democracy. “The structure and focus of SAC allowed the students to share various viewpoints and opened up the opportunity to understand alternative positions to arrive at a general agreement,” Mrs. Lovasco said.
