Dozens of community members joined in the celebration at Shoreham-Wading
River Central School District’s recent English as a New Language Family
Literacy and Cultural Share Night, held at Miller Avenue School.
Posters, flags, stations of various cultures, foods from all nations,
packets of questions to stimulate conversations and other
getting-to-know-you games and activities for students and their families
were part of the event that welcomed all to the school community. ENL
teachers Ms. Jennifer Hoey, Ms. Tricia McCabe and Ms. Susana
Vique-Kearney and Director of Humanities Mrs. Nicole Waldbauer organized
the event along with librarians from the North Shore Public Library.
Students and their families learned about important resources offered by
the district and the public library, signed up for library cards and
shared dinner and fun activities with teachers and administrators.
Several students then shared their touching “I Am” poems, a project they
worked on with the ENL teachers and with the help of their families.
