Dozens of Shoreham-Wading River High School students attended the “Icons
of Freedom V: Student Speech and Press in American Democracy” at the
Touro College Law Center in Central Islip. The 40 juniors from the
Advanced Placement U.S. History and Advanced Placement U.S. Government
classes taught by Walter Caskie, were joined by students from several
schools across Long Island. The symposium featured guest speakers who
addressed issues pertaining to students First Amendment rights in
school. The two keynote speakers were Mary Beth Tinker and Cathy
Kuhlmeier Fray from the Tinker v. Des Moines and Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier
landmark First Amendment U.S. Supreme Court cases. Both speakers shared
their experiences of participating in the fight to protect First
Amendment rights of students in public schools. At the end of the
program, students participated in a question and answer session and met
the speakers.
