As a result of their dedication and high performance in mathematics, two
students from the high school have each been named a Long Island
Scholar of Mathematics.
Sophomore Mika Misawa and freshman Selene Tan were accepted into a
special program by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted
and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury.
The duo will join 85 students selected by the Institute out of
approximately 500 top-ranking student applicants. Their placement was
earned by the recommendations of math teacher Ellen Fraser, a written
statement from each student and high scores on a rigorous entrance exam.
Students in the program attend 50 hours of instruction over the course
of 20 Saturday mornings. The curriculum covers topics including
algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory.
