Dear Shoreham-Wading River Residents,

I am writing today with an update on the Fitness Center. I am pleased to share that a temporary Wellness Center has been opened in a room in the high school. The room includes floor matting, free weights, cardio machines as well as a new TRX Fitness station. Students will be able to utilize the room as part of our physical education program and also after school.

Additionally, at the 9/25/18 Board of Education meeting, several options to develop a permanent Wellness Center within the high school were reviewed as alternatives to remediating the structural supports necessary to reopen the Fitness Center. The two options reviewed were the partial use of the auxiliary gym or the use of two rooms located near the cafeteria.

The Board of Education also directed administration to survey students, physical education teachers and coaches as to what fitness equipment they would like to have access to in a Wellness Center and with the support of District architects develop floor plans with a cost analysis for outfitting both locations as potential Wellness Centers. This information will be used to support a decision by the Board of Education on either remediating the current Fitness Center or creating a Wellness Center within the high school.

I will continue to keep you updated on any future plans regarding the Fitness Center.
