Dear Shoreham-Wading River Residents,

I am writing today with an update on the Fitness Center, which is located in an external structure at the High School. For those unaware, this center is used throughout the year as part of the District’s physical education curriculum, in conjunction with our athletic program and by community residents through a fitness club.

At last night’s Board of Education meeting, the District received a report on the structural integrity of the space based on the findings of a recently commissioned building review and physical analysis.

This report, which was conducted by the District’s architect and engineer, raised concerns that the flooring is unable to adequately support the facility’s current use as a fitness center. As such, and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students, staff and community residents, the center will remain closed until further notice. It is expected that this closure will last several months.

Please be assured that the District is in the process of developing a plan to create a workout space at the High School for our students to use during the upcoming school year and fall athletic season. Additionally, our architect is working to develop options for the remediation of the Fitness Center flooring supports to ensure that they meet proper safety standards. An update on these plans will be shared at the District’s next Board of Education meeting, which will be held on August 21 at 7:00 pm in the HS Library.

I thank all of our residents in advance for their understanding of this matter. The safety and security of our students and residents is of utmost concern, and we are working to take the proper steps to address this issue.

I will provide an update as soon as new information is available.

Sincerely,

Gerard W. Poole
Superintendent of Schools
