The Women in Science and Engineering students Eilis Casey and Elle
Schepis along with their coach, SWR science teacher Lori Racaniello,
embarked on Stony Brook University’s SoMAS Research Vessel out of
Southampton. The students participated in water quality research and
observed the flora and fauna of the Shinnecock Bay. They were able to
observe local fish, crabs, invertebrates, algae, sea gulls, egrets,
cormorants, osprey and ducks. The naturalist on board described the
history of the area and the environmental concerns and local human
impact on the waters and wildlife, and what the students could do to
become stewards of the area.
