On March 10, high school Principal Dan Holtzman and Director of Humanities Dr. Rebecca Chowske presented a workshop at the Long Island Language Arts Council and Nassau Reading Council’s annual conference. The event was attended by several hundred Long Island English Language Arts and literacy specialists.

The educators’ workshop, called “Supporting Literacy Transfer between the ELA and Social Studies Classroom,” focused on connections between ELA and social studies practices and also tackled common terms defined differently in social studies. Additionally, the workshop touched on interdisciplinary implications, changing assessments and solutions to predictable problems that regularly confuse students as they move between ELA and social studies.

In addition to the presentation, Mr. Holtzman and Dr. Chowske shared their workshop with the Shoreham-Wading River English department and a joint English/social studies professional development session is planned.
