High school students were educated about cyber law, cyberbulling and risks associated with social media and sending inappropriate text messages during two recent assemblies.

During the programs, female students heard from Suffolk County Police Officer Nancy Ward, while male students listened to words of wisdom spoken by Officer Steven Hughes.

Both officers echoed similar messages to the students: think before you send anything over text or social media. The speakers further provided examples of students who suffered because they simply hit the send button without thinking about the possible repercussions.

Before concluding the program, Officer Hughes encouraged the students to “be responsible” when using digital platforms. “We roll the dice when we post something online and, as a result, you never know where one message will turn up,” said Officer Ward.
