To pay tribute to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, the middle school student council participated in the National MyGoodDeed project by holding a school supply drive for Long Island families.

The effort was spearheaded by eighth-grade student council members Christina DeLuca, Courtney Palumbo and Gianna Tambasco-Cerbone and resulted in the collection of boxes of backpacks, notebooks and various other school supplies during the week of September 8 to September 11.

“We really wanted to do something for a special cause,” said Courtney.  “We felt this drive would be a great idea.”

To help ensure that they could aid as many children as possible, the students worked with their peers on the student council to secure donations from fellow classmates.  Additionally and separately, the three went above and beyond to ensure the success of the project by holding a weekend bake sale in the community. These funds, which totaled $133, were used to purchase backpacks.

“We are very proud of these students,” said Andrea Monz, student council advisor.

All of the supplies collected will be donated to the Family Service League’s Backpacks for Back-To-School effort as part of the MyGoodDeed Project, which was launched in 2002 to inspire Americans to do a good deed in memory of Sept. 11.
