In continuing to foster initiatives related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), the district hired Dr. Amy Meyer as its new director of STEM in January.
Dr. Meyer has been working closely with elementary teachers to integrate STEM into all lessons by rewriting curricula, and is helping teachers develop hands-on lessons to strengthen student learning at all levels. She is also working to strengthen community partnerships with Brookhaven National Laboratory and other STEM organizations, as well as adding a robotics component to technology courses at the high school and middle school.
Prior to joining the Shoreham-Wading River School District, Dr. Meyer served as the K-12 STEM educator for the William Floyd School District, where she also taught physics, earth science and biology. She earned her doctorate at Curtin University and her undergraduate degree at Dowling College.
