The district is pleased to announce that high school seniors Sean Mannix and Brent Mertz have been named 2015 National Merit Semifinalists.

Sean and Brent are among the 16,000 students included on the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program’s list, which was released Sept. 10. Qualifying because of their high SAT scores, both students now have the opportunity to compete for one of 7,600 National Merit scholarships, which will be offered in the spring of 2015.

“I wasn’t expecting to be named,” said Sean, who is active in the school’s drama and music program. He has his sights set on attending a university close to the city next fall, where he would like to study theater.

“It’s really validating; it’s great to be recognized,” said Brent, who serves as president of the National Honor Society and a member of the Brainstormers and Global Awareness clubs. He has submitted an application to MIT, as well as several other universities, and plans to study engineering or enter the biomedical field.
