Dear Shoreham-Wading River School Community:

As we struggle as a Nation to come to grips with the unspeakable events in Newtown, Connecticut, the thoughts and prayers of the Shoreham-Wading River school community are with those most directly impacted by this tragedy.

The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. It is imperative to note that our schools are a safe place. With that said, we are currently reviewing our safety and security procedures and will make enhancements where necessary and on an as needed basis. The Board of Education will consider possible safety and security enhancements at its December 18th Board of Education meeting, which will be held at 8 pm in the High School Library.

Throughout the week, members of our guidance department, as well as our school psychologists, are available to assist any student who may need to speak with an adult regarding this terrible tragedy. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you feel that your child is in need of special assistance and/or if you feel that you need guidance with how to best approach this situation with your child.

On one final note, we have been informed by the 7th Precinct that the Suffolk County Police Department will be increasing motor patrols around all schools within the county. Please do not be concerned if you see any police vehicles patrolling our facilities.

On behalf of the entire district, I thank you for your support and the confidence you place in us on a daily basis as we try and maintain a safe and supportive educational environment for your children.

Steven Cohen
Superintendent of Schools
