To celebrate Fire Prevention Month during October, students at Wading River Elementary School received a special visit by members of the Wading River Fire Department. On Oct. 5, students gathered to learn from “Chief Mark” and other firefighters, who provided the children with a number of easy-to-remember tips in the event of an emergency.
Students learned to establish an outside meeting place with their family in case of a fire, as well as the importance of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers. To help alleviate any fears of what a firefighter looks (and sounds) like when fully dressed in a uniform, firefighter Bill donned his full gear for the students.
To complete the morning, the Wading River children toured a number of emergency vehicles, including a fire engine and ambulance. Members of the fire and rescue department pointed out pieces of equipment, answered questions and even allowed the students to tour the inside of the vehicles.
