The Shoreham-Wading River School District was honored to welcome Regent Roger Tilles to Shoreham-Wading River High School and Wading River School. A member of the New York State Education Department Board of Regents and a strong supporter of Long Island schools, his comprehensive visit began with a welcome by the high school’s Orpheus Quartet and conversations with AP Capstone students, where he commented on the numerous opportunities that are afforded them throughout the district. He also viewed a presentation from the Natural Helpers and observed the work of students in the unique Long Island Sustainability classroom. Regent Tilles then visited the Wading River School where he was greeted by the Welcome Ambassadors, a sign created by the art club and the fifth grade band performing, under the leadership of Mrs. Christina Meli, the catchy Pharrell Williams song “Happy.” He also learned the Wading River School song written by music teacher Mr. Mark Verity and listened to a performance by the Wading River Bell Choir under the direction of music teacher Ms. Jenilyn Smith. He also had a discussion with the fourth grade Student Council who posed thoughtful questions for him and gave him an overview of the work they’ve accomplished during the school year. He also took a walkthrough of several classrooms, watching students and teachers in action before culminating his visit with some favorite Shel Silverstein poems that he shared with Mr. Marc Vallina’s third grade students.
